Mini-games are for Mini-gamers AND Busy-gamers

I recently read an article on Insomnia titled "Mini-games are for mini-gamers." To summarize, the article basically says indie gamers promote indie games because they're too stupid to play the more complex games.

I do agree with some of the article's points, and probably a majority of the so-called "indie" games fall in the category mentioned in the article. However, indie/doujin games do have their usefulness, for example, at work I can play a quick game of *insert favorite indie game* during my coffee/lunch/secret break, but it's almost impossible to play more complex games like Warcraft 3 or Counter-Strike without getting noticed (although I did hear a friend of mine played Dota during work).

Back in my highschool days, I used to play Pocket Tanks and Icy Tower during class, we used to upload these games secretly onto the school's server so the whole class ended up addicted. Anything more complex would have probably resulted in getting caught by an angry school admin.

Finally, not everyone has access at all times to octa-core 10 GHz 5GB RAM gaming monstrosity of a PC, and sometimes running games like Half Life 2 at full setting is simply impossible (especially on some laptops), so a small game of Cave Story sometimes do help pass time.

I still remember how I beat Knytt over my lunch break during my internship last summer...the good ol' innocent day~

What an absurdity.

You know what, there isn't such a thing as a "busy gamer", because gaming and playing are leisure activities. And the fact that you don't have access to a decent gaming rig doesn't prevent you from playing great, probably much better old games than most indie stuff, nor does it change the fact that you're still playing lousy new ones. But hey, if you are actually busy then you're supposed to be working or having your lunch, not playing.

I think you were doing it wrong

I think you were doing it wrong in high school, some of the more industrious gamers at my high school managed to stowaway Counter-Strike and Unreal Tournament onto the school's servers. Not only did the school's IT guy not care, we also had some awesome teachers that didn't care as long as we finished our work.

Also, you don't need a powerful machine to enjoy old classics like Deus Ex, Civilization, Half-Life, Starcraft, X-Com, etc. There's a lot more complex and enjoyable games to be played from the past that completely destroy what any indie game can offer today.
